Aging Anxiety and Quality of Life in Elderly

Abstract
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the level of aging anxiety and quality of life and to explore the relationship between aging anxiety and quality of life in the elderly.

Methods: Subjects were 187 elderly aged 65 or more. Data was collected by trained research assistants. Aging anxiety was evaluated using the Anxiety about Aging Scale for the elderly and quality of life was measured using the Geriatric Quality of Life Scale.

Results: The score of aging anxiety totaled 56.09 and the item average was 2.93. ¡¯Loss of autonomy¡¯ was the factor with the highest anxiety level (3.63). Level of aging anxiety was significantly different by economic state, illness, and health status. The score of quality of life was 53.49. and showed a negative correlation with aging anxiety.

Conclusion: Scores of aging anxiety was somewhat higher than those of the younger population and a negative correlation between aging anxiety and quality of life was revealed. However, repeated studies are needed to make this result more concrete.
